Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

CONCLUSIONS: In our initial experience, SDD is associated with significantly lower patient narcotic utilization for postoperative pain management than hypothesized. This pilot SDD program resulted in a change in clinical practice with reduction of prescribed discharge oxycodone 5 mg quantity from #40 to #10 tablets.

The psychosocial impact of type 1 diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

CONCLUSIONS: Despite life-style changes and a negative psychosocial impact, we did not find objective evidence of any detrimental impact of the lockdown on diabetic control. However, higher HbA1c correlated with children feeling more depressed and alone. There was a comparable frequency of anxiety concerning the risk of severe COVID illness in children and their parents.

The Fate of Intranasally Instilled Silver Nanoarchitectures

The intranasal administration of drugs allows an effective and noninvasive therapeutic action on the respiratory tract. In an era of rapidly increasing antimicrobial resistance, new approaches to the treatment of communicable diseases, especially lung infections, are urgently needed. Metal nanoparticles are recognized as a potential last-line defense, but limited data on the biosafety and nano/biointeractions preclude their use. Here, we quantitatively and qualitatively assess the fate and the...

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 has further increased the urgent need for digital transformation within the health care settings, with the use of artificial intelligence/deep learning, internet of things, telecommunication network/virtual platform, and blockchain. The recent advent of metaverse, an interconnected online universe, with the synergistic combination of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality described several years ago, presents a new era of immersive and real-time...

Getting Critical Information During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Experiences of Spanish and Chinese Speakers With Limited English Proficiency

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

People with limited English proficiency in the United States have suffered disproportionate negative health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective communications are critical tools in addressing inequities insofar as they can motivate adoption of protective behaviors and reduce incidence of disease; however, little is known about experiences of communities with limited English proficiency receiving relevant information during COVID-19 or other outbreaks. To address this gap and provide...

Identification of repurposing therapeutics toward SARS-CoV-2 main protease by virtual screening

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

SARS-CoV-2 causes the current global pandemic coronavirus disease 2019. Widely-available effective drugs could be a critical factor in halting the pandemic. The main protease (3CLpro) plays a vital role in viral replication; therefore, it is of great interest to find inhibitors for this enzyme. We applied the combination of virtual screening based on molecular docking derived from the crystal structure of the peptidomimetic inhibitors (N3, 13b, and 11a), and experimental verification revealed...

COVID-19 lockdown policy and heterogeneous responses of urban mobility: Evidence from the Philippines

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

Throughout 2020, national and subnational governments worldwide implemented nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to contain the spread of COVID-19. These included community quarantines, also known as lockdowns, of varying length, scope, and stringency that restricted mobility. To assess the effect of community quarantines on urban mobility in the Philippines, we analyze a new source of data: cellphone-based origin-destination flows made available by a major telecommunication company. First, we...

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence at urban and rural sites in Kaduna State, Nigeria, during October/November 2021, immediately prior to detection of the Omicron variant

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

CONCLUSIONS: This study provides baseline SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in Kaduna State, Nigeria, immediately prior to the spread of the Omicron variant. It indicates that in October/November 2021, approximately 56% of the population did not have detectable antibodies, and population subgroups with particularly low seroprevalence remain. It highlights limitations in using PCR-confirmed cases to estimate infection rates. The data will inform public health strategies in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan...

Convection Driven Ultra-Rapid Protein Detection Via Nanobody-Functionalized Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Conventional biosensors rely on the diffusion-dominated transport of the target analyte to the sensor surface. Consequently, they require an incubation step that may take several hours to allow for the capture of analyte molecules by sensor biorecognition sites. This incubation step is a primary cause of long sample-to-result times. Here, we integrate alternating current electrothermal flow (ACET) in an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT)-based sensor to accelerate the device operation....

Cross-Species Transmission of Bat Coronaviruses in the Americas: Contrasting Patterns between Alphacoronavirus and Betacoronavirus

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

Bats harbor the largest number of coronavirus (CoV) species among mammals, serving as major reservoirs of alphaCoVs and betaCoVs, which can jump between bat species or to different mammalian hosts, including humans. Bat-CoV diversity is correlated with host taxonomic diversity, with the highest number of CoV species found in areas with the highest levels of bat species richness. Although the Americas harbor a unique and distinctive CoV diversity, no cross-species transmission (CST) or...

“I Think I Have Enough for Now”: Living with COVID-19 Antibodies in the Philippines

Di |2022-06-30T01:00:00+02:00Giugno 30th, 2022|Categorie: Coronavirus PubMed|

Drawing on face-to-face and virtual fieldwork in the Philippines, I document the emergence of antibody testing as a popular practice among Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping them make decisions about vaccines and other life choices. Antibodies gave people a sense of agency and control amid a health crisis for which political and medical authorities failed to offer certainty and hope, particularly at a time of vaccine scarcity and viral surges. However, by diverting attention from...
